New Pet Shelter Approved by Board of Selectmen 
On June 17, 2008, the Poland Board of Selectmen approved a new Animal Protection Annex to the Town's Emergency Operations Plan. This annex outlines the procedures for sheltering pets during a disaster or large scale emergency. Currently, the town has designated the Wash Bay at the Poland Public Works Garage as the Pet Shelter. Information on procedures for sheltering your pet will be released to the public soon. The shelter was required by the Department of Homeland Security as a response to the problems that were encountered during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Residents are requested to review the "Preparing Your Pets for Emergencies" Link to the left to be ready in the event of an emergency.
Poland Officials take Advanced Incident Command Courses
The Poland Emergency Management Director, Town Manager, Public Works Director, Fire/Rescue Chief, and Deputy Chief have recently taken training on Advanced Incident Command, as was required by the Department of Homeland Security. These courses were designed to educate students on how to work within the National Incident Management System (NIMS). By taking these courses, the town was allowed to continue to obtain Department of Homeland Security Grants, and to receive future disaster assistance.
New Emergency Generator for Poland Regional High School
The Town of Poland, thanks to the diligent efforts of the Poland Fire Department, was recently awarded the largest Department of Homeland Security Grant in the State of Maine. The Grant of $224,500 which includes $221,500 for the Emergency Generator and $3,000 for Pet Cages for the Pet Shelter. The new generator will allow the Poland Regional High School to become a Regional Emergency Shelter for the Towns of Poland, Minot, and Mechanic Falls. Currently, the plan is to install the generator sometime early this summer.
Hurricane Season Begins June 1st
On June 1st, hurricane season will officially begin, and will run through November 30th. Though the State of Maine does not normally feel the impact of hurricanes states to the south do, but we do get our share. The last hurricane to hit Maine and cause significant damage occurred in 1991, with Hurricane Bob. For the Town of Poland, many people were without power for as much as a week or two. Being prepared, wheter for hurricanes or any emergency, residents are requested to make sure that they are prepared for the possibility.
